Eldar is the dark-ambient / martial project of Barcelona-based musician Marc Merinee and his female acolyte Merce Spica, whose prolific output under this moniker - an ancient Spanish word roughly translating as ‘epidemic’ if their bio is to be believed – debuted with the release of 2005’s Askataan opus on Spanish digital label Black Montanas. As it stands, this new album, their first release for Swedish powerhouse Cold Meat Industry, is in fact the sixth full-length the band have produced. Its title, Sapere Aude, refers to a Latin phrase meaning ‘dare to know’ which was first coined by the Roman classical poet Horace back in the day but was most famously used by Prussian philosopher Immanuel Kant in his 1784 essay ‘What is Enlightenment?’ to enjoin what he calls the ‘domestic cattle’ (the plebe, Horace would’ve said) to engage in the pursuit of reason by questioning the order of things as much as they possibly can. A vast program, indeed – and one, incidentally, which still holds very much true in this age of over-information and mass infotainment – that seems difficult, if not downright impossible, to translate into music. But seeing how most dark-ambient / martial acts have never shied away from using pompous titles (and Latin sure does sound kewl and kult-ish, if anything else), it’s not like Eldar can be held responsible for starting an ignominious trend here. With the exception of the introduction, all of the tracks on offer are the fruit of a collaboration between Eldar and different like-minded, more or less known bands and projects (Der Blauer Reiter, The Wyrm, Argentum, Mazur, Plagiarism Is Art, to name but a few). Most of them hail from Spain or the Spanish-speaking world, a welcome introduction, in other words, for those of us, like yours truly, who know precious little about the music scene across the Pyreneans. Given the generally versatile nature of such cooperative works, I am glad to report that Sapere Aude flows rather admirably well and exhumes an overall sense of purpose frequently lacking when two separate projects decide to combine forces, let alone fifteen. That it should manage to achieve such an admirable sense of unity despite the vast array of guest musicians gracing truly is a remarkable feat that speaks volumes about the ability of Marc and Merce to harness the visions of their fellow musicians and make them their own.

More dark-ambient than martial, the music of Eldar follows in the vein of their earlier material, though more refined and focused (some of the older stuff sounds closer to first-period Mortiis than seems comfortable) and evidently benefits from the various talents that have been brought together. Overall, it weaves a sonic tapestry not too dissimilar from what Nordvargr did with some of the quieter, more contemplative Toroidh material, the distant drumming heard on some of the tracks here merely acting as a faint martial echo, some sort of gathering of the clouds over already darkened skies, and those looking for no-nonsense martial pump will be best looking elsewhere (Arditi’s latest, anyone?). While not being the new sensation that it was hyped up to be for mere commercial reasons (‘This is classic old-school CMI music ?’ Puh-lease!), this latest effort from the Barcelonan duo nonetheless manages to strike enough of the proverbial chord to merit the attention of the industrial record-buying public. Hardly the stuff of legend (or year-end top-ten lists, for that matter) but, truth be told, not the most unnameable horror to have befallen CMI completists over the last few years.....

Cold Meat Industry presents the new release by Eldar, a Barcelona-based project born in 2004 and already active with two obscure CDrs produced by Skulline. "Sapere Aude" reveals them in a more accomplished way and brings back a certain sound from the very early days of the prestigious Swedish label: the low-key noise and ambient strata, occasional voice samples and unobtrusive percussions, indeed, recall of Archon Satani, Inanna or even of Raison d'être's "Prospectus I". The atmosphere is oppressing, the sounds bleak and raw, just like in the first outputs of those death industrial prime-movers. Some may complain about the far from perfect sound quality of this CD, but, on the contrary, one of the winning features of "Sapere Aude" is definitely its unpolished profile. According to the notes, each song was conceived in collaboration with a different artist, mostly Spanish ones (the by now well-known Der Blaue Reiter, and other unknown names, such as Argentum, Verbum, Persona or Escuadron De La Muerte). However, the CD sounds very continuous as a whole, so you can't notice their contributions very much. Eldar give their best in tracks like "Aevum VI", worth of BDN's "Pain In Progress" (slow and suffocating, with a repetitive metal thud, some kind of weary melody and even a Mussolini sample declaming in the background), "Una Madre Reptil En El Nido" (probably the album's highlight, powerful and martial, even if always with that sensation of disease affecting the sound and the general atmosphere you breath in the music), or "Contubernio" (with more significant martial percussions and acoustic strings, closer to the early Raison d'être). Maybe, they could have just cut out the last four tracks, not particularly impressive and completely loosing the tension created by the effective previous ones. Obviously, these Catalans don't invent anything, but they manage to give us back that special obscure homemade feeling we became addicted to back in the days, and lately mostly disappeared from the dark ambient and industrial scene. A bit of a nostalgic release, maybe. But a good one, for sure.

Eldar is a quite experienced project hailing from Barcelona. After several self-released productions Eldar has now joined the famous Cold Meat Industry for a new experience in shock of their dark ambient work. The picture on the front cover of the album reminds me of the work of Goya, which seems like an appropriated introduction to “Sapere Aude”. Marc Merinee and Merce Spica invited an amazing number of guests and the least I can say is that it created a nice fusion of ambient work. The symbiosis of dark ambient and martial music remains the main ingredient of this Spanish duo. The input of other Spanish projects like Der Blauer Reiter, Psychaotic, Wyrm, Nurss, Argentum and many others seems to reveal a rather unknown Spanish fascination for this kind of music. The experience of Der Blauer Reiter emerges on the track, “The Grave Of Mankind”. A vague martial rhythmic joined by harder drones and a typical soundscape make this song one of the most essential parts of “Sapere Aude”. Another main cut is “Aevum VI” where Eldar set up a collaboration with Verbum. I here like the spoken samplings while the dark ambient content leaded by punching drones really excels in an obscure sonic force. The dark ambient side of this album is definitely the main characteristic while the martial element avoids Eldar from becoming a dark ambient stereotype. I know that there are not many bands that can bring both inputs to such a homogenous result. “Sapere Aude” sounds like it is the fruitful result of patience and friendship between bands! It can be an opportunity for some of these guests to join the big Cold Meat family.

Barcelona isn’t well known by its dark music. That there’s plenty of hidden quality in Barcelona Cold Meat will make an effort to show you. They recently have contracted Eldar and now Sapere Aude is released on this legendary label. Eldar is the project of Marc Merinee and Merce Spira and was founded in 2004. Sapere Aude is a fifteen track album which contains dark-ambient combined with martial elements. Analogue sounds and voices together bombastic percussion have been implemented in an intriguing whole. Each track has been created in a collaboration of with close related bands. Collaboration with acts such as Argentum, Verbum, Plagiarism Is Art, Ruins Winter and Escuadron de la Muerte have seen to it that there’s enough to discover on this album. It sounds like a classic CMI production which has some references with acts such as Archon Satani, Desidirii Marginis, Ildfrost, Megaptera and even a bit like the old Der Blutharsch. It might take you more than just a few spins but Sapere Aude truly is a powerful and dark release. Fans of the genre will surely devour this beautiful piece of art. Highly recommended!.

Martial industrial - that orchestral- or ambient-based subgenre characterized by militaristic drumming and inspiration from Europes history, has passed it..s days of glory - or has it? In my opinion this genre was at it..s strongest in the late 90..s and early 2000..s when Der Blutharsch and Sophia were making their best works. A few years ago a book about the genre, titled Battlenoise, was released - a suitable epitaph for a withered scene. Even neofolk bands have moved on to more fruitful themes than age-old war hero aesthetics.

Yet similar new bands keep appearing. The kind of flirt with totalitarism instigated by NON and Laibach does not belong to these bands, yet the marching drumms roll and past times haunt in the form of speech samples. Cold Meat Industy's new attachment Eldar clearly falls into this caste: their aesthetics are strongy related to martial industrial, although they might strive to create something new. Does Eldar have means to somehow spawn life out of this tradition and create something fresh out of it? The thought is not impossible, as other CMI-affiliated artists like Rome and :Golgatha: have managed to take inspiration from these roots and go into completely new directions. One merit I can immediately ascribe to Eldar: the band has a very delicious sound, which brings it apart from most of the martial genre. There is substance and presence, which is far from both the thin digital sound which is a plague of this time, and from cheap synth sounds. Especially the drums are professionally recorded and sound very rich and vivid. The whole of the style mixes together many kinds of elements, including much industrial ambient in LOKI-style. But the closest comparison would definitely be Les Joyaux de la Princesse. Eldar has the same kind of vague atmosperic, yet somehow present feel to it. Towards the end, the record seems to get more "tired" and clichéd. The promises of the early record remain promises, but still it leaves a nice taste. Eldar convinces me with it..s substantial sound, but still needs more originality. I can find many potential seeds of a more personal style on this record, and it remains to be seen if Eldar manages to find an individual path and sound in the future.

Das schwedische Label COLD MEAT INDUSTRY hat diesmal etwas im spanischen Dark Ambient-Underground gewildert und ist dabei auf das Projekt ELDAR aus Barcelona gestoßen. Das Duo hat in der Vergangenheit mehr oder weniger unter Ausschluss der Öffentlichkeit seine Musik ausgelebt, mit Hilfe des führenden Labels in Sachen Dark Ambient beginnt nun allerdings eine neue Zeitrechnung für ELDAR. Damit das spanische Duo diesen Start nicht ganz alleine durchstehen muss, hat man sich bis auf Ausnahme des Openers "Zeitgeist", ein intensiver Dark Ambient-Track mit Martial Folk-Elementen, zahlreiche musikalische Freunde und Weggefährten mit ins Boot geholt. Der Bekanntheitsgrad der Gastmusiker ist dabei allerdings überschaubar und nur wenige Projekte wie ARGENTUM oder DER BLAUE REITER haben außerhalb der Szene einen gewissen Bekanntheitsgrad. Dementsprechend schwierig ist es auch rauszuhören, inwieweit diese Projekte ihren eigenen musikalischen Stil mit in die Stücke einbringen, da es zwischen den einzelnen Tracks eher nur feine Unterschiede gibt, sich das Grundgerüst mit seiner Mischung aus sphärischen und kalten Dark Ambient-Sounds sowie martialischen Percussions jedoch durch das komplette Album zieht. "Sapere Aude" ist durch eine überwiegend beklemmende Grundstimmung gekennzeichnet, der martialische Bombast sorgt zwar für eine gewisse Auflockerung, strahlt gleichzeitig jedoch ein zusätzliches Gefühl der Bedrohung aus. Vereinzelte Sprachsamples verstärken diesen Eindruck noch zusätzlich. Einzelne Tracks an dieser Stelle herauszuheben, macht wenig Sinn, "Sapere Aude" ist jedoch ein mehr als vielversprechender Start von ELDAR auf dem CMI-Label. Wer die bisherigen Dark Ambient-Veröffenlichungen des schwedischen Labels bisher fest auf seiner Einkaufsliste hatte, dürfte auch mit "Sapere Aude" somit nichts falsch machen.

Aus Barcelona stammt Eldar, die mittlerweile auf eine Vielzahl von Veröffentlichungen und Samplerbeiträgen im Neofolk-/Martial Industrial-Umfeld zurückblicken können. Nach diversen Veröffentlichungen u.a. beim kleinen und feinen Skullline-Label ist „Sapere Aude“ das erste Album beim traditionsreichen „Cold Meat“-Label, und das wahrscheinlich ausgereifteste Werk der Spanier. „Sapere Aude“ lebt von einer düsteren Dark und unheilvollen Dark Ambient-Stimmung, die immer wieder durch Trommeln und Pauken durchbrochen wird und ab und auch mit Sprachfetzen und unkenntlichen Spachsamples aufwartet. Das Besondere an diesem Album ist, dass es eine Reihe Kollaborationen Eldars mit anderen Projekten beinhaltet, darunter Verbum, Der blaue Reiter, Argentum und Persona, so dass „Sapere Aude“ ein ungemein vielfältiges und vielschichtiges Werk geworden ist, dessen Stimmung von Stück zu Stück variiert, von harschen Passagen bis hin zu sakralen Stücken reicht, ohne dabei den roten Faden zu verlieren. Eldar sind von allen Bands, die derzeit bei CMI unter Vertrag sind wohl am ehesten die Band, die das traditionsreiche Erbe des Labels fortzusetzen im Stande sind.

Eldar ist ein Wort der iberischen Sprache und bedeutet übersetzt soviel wie 'Epidemie'. Die Botschaft ist die Konfrontation von Gegensätzen, beladen mit Symbolik. Eldars Ziel ist es, Emotionen und Gefühle um die Seele und den Geist der Menschen, die ihre Musik hören, zu erwecken. Und ohne Frage ist ihnen das auch gelungen. "Sapere Aude" birgt eine wunderbare Melange aus Dark Ambient Elementen in Verbindung mit martialischem Industrial. Musikalisch umgesetzt wurde dies von den beiden Akteuren MarcMerinee und Merce Spica. Ein interessanter Tatbestand ist der, dass auf diesem Werk vierzehn (!) Projekte / Bands mitgewirkt und diese natürlich somit auf jedem einzelnen Stück ihren speziellen, eigenen Stempel, in Zusammenarbeit mit Eldar, aufgedrückt haben. Dank der Beziehungen von Eldar wurde der Silberling mit anderen Bands der spanischen und amerikanischen Szene eingespielt. Also eines kann schon vorweg gesagt werden: "Sapere Aude" ist finster geworden. Und nicht nur finster, sondern auch noch verdammt gut.
Nachdem das bedrohlich wirkende "Zeitgeist" verklungen ist und mit "Le Syndrome De Cotard" ein leicht nostalgisches Stück präsentiert wurde, gibt es mit dem folgenden "The Grave Of Mankind" den ersten von vielen Höhepunkten. Martialische Drums in Kombination mit einer wehleidigen Melodie bewirken da einen wahren Hörgenuss, der sich im dunklen "From The Deep Sea" fortsetzt.
Ich kann benennen, was ich will, eine Granate folgt der zweiten. Hört euch Stücke wie "Aevum VI" oder "Una Madre Reptil En El Nido" an, da stimmt einfach alles! Egal ob bei treibenden Elementen oder melodischen Eingebungen wie in "Contubernio", Eldar haben die Messlatte hier enorm hoch gelegt. Fazit: "Sapere Aude" birgt intensives, beeindruckendes als auch unheilvolles Klangkino, welches sich bedrohlich im heimischen Raum ausbreitet und auch nach längerer Zeit noch ordentlich im Kopf spukt. Zahlreiche Songs und eine Spielzeit, die ihr Geld wert ist - was will man mehr. Eines der abwechslungsreichsten Werke der letzten Zeit, hier besteht definitiv Kaufzwang!

Sin duda, es una excelente noticia el anuncio de un nuevo álbum de Eldar. Esta vez, con el sello sueco de la Cold meat industry y con una propuesta atractiva que refleja el trabajo en colaboración con otros proyectos muy interesantes, la mayoría de ellos nacionales. También se incluye uno de los mejores temas de Eldar, “Zeigeist”, que inicialmente quedaba recogido en el recopilatorio “Free your mind”.

Recibimos con agrado la noticia de que Sapere Aude  de Eldar, editado en Cold Meat Industry, estará en las tiendas hoy mismo. Primer lanzamiento del año, habrá al menos otro en un futuro cercano, presenta las colaboraciones de Marc Merinee con una amplia representación de proyectos de experimentación industrial y marcial ibéricos y latinoamericanos. Así aparecen Psychaotic, Der Blaue Reiter, The Wyrm, N-URSS, Persona, Reserva Espiritual de Occidente, Argentum, Verbum, Miguel Mazur, Plagiarism is Art, ERG, Ruins Winter, Lomo Bajo y Escuadrón de la Muerte. Marc y Merce Spica, que se integra en Eldar tras participar en un tema de Askataan, según nos cuentan, a fuer de otros colaboradores, estarán presentando el disco en directo el próximo sábado 4 de abril en Demonix de Hospitalet junto al inefable Andrew King, a la espera de Deus Ignotus y su nueva colaboración con Brown Sierra, y Wertham. Más información en el cartel incluído al final. En mayo, el primero (día del trabajador y de los grandes fastos en la Plaza Roja) y el segundo de, estarán junto a Der Blaue Reiter y Persona actuando en Oremus de Gijón y Arena de Torrelavega.

Después de más de 20 años de historia de la insigne discográfica sueca Eldar: el primer grupo español en Cold Meat Industry. Por méritos propios y por no descansar ni de día ni de noche, con cinco álbums publicados hasta la fecha, el proyecto musical barcelonés Eldar se consagra. Eldar son Marc Merinee y Merce Spica, dos barceloneses que desde 2005 no han parado de publicar trabajos. Habían conseguido abrirse un hueco a través de la tienda de productos exclusivos Skull Line pero ahora por fin les ha abierto las puertas uno de los grandes: el sello independiente sueco Cold Meat Industry. Con este sello editan su nuevo álbum "Sapere Aude". El estar allí es toda una noticia y así lo celebramos.  Su música se mueve entre el Dark Ambient y el Martial y, entre otros, han colaborado con grupos de la escena como Psychaotic, Der Blauer Reiter, The Wyrm, Nurss, Persona, R.E.O., Argentum, Verbum, Miguel Mazur, Plagiarism Is Art, Erg, Ruins Winter, Lomo Bajo, Escuadron de la Muerte. Les deseamos la mejor de las suertes.

Han tenido que pasar más de 20 años para que por fin Roger Karmanik, el patrón de la escena dark ambient a nivel europeo, se fije en un proyecto español. Eldar lo ha conseguido. Estamos ante un trabajo singular y, por lo que representa, es, yo diría, un triunfo de toda la escena Dark Ambient y Martial hispanoamericana, ya que el álbum que presenta Eldar (el séptimo en su trayectoria desde 2004), es una reinterpretación de temas de bandas españolas e hispanoamericanas del ramo, eso si, pasadas por una turmix made in Eldar. Así que Eldar está siendo el abanderado de toda una escena hispanoamericana que se movía en un terreno ultraindependiente, con publicaciones de cortísima tirada o sellos online, caso por ejemplo de contubernio.es. ¿Puede significar este disco el descubrimiento de toda una escena subterránea y que a partir de ahora toda esta hornada de grupos sea descubierta a nivel internacional? Esperemos que sí. Y entremos ya en el álbum. Un CD completo de versiones de grupos diferentes podría implicar un cierto grado de heterogeneidad pero lo cierto es que no es así y que Eldar, siendo unas veces más fiel y otras menos al original logra poner su impronta en cada uno de ellos. Citaremos dos casos opuestos. Por un lado la versión de Reserva Espiritual de Occidente 'Alexander Nevsky' es literalmente la canción original a la que se ha disminuido el volumen y la cual ha sido sumergida en una especie de bruma sonora y sobre la que se han añadido los timbales. Han bastado estos dos elementos para hacer que esta pieza encaje en el puzzle. Sin embargo, con un grupo muy cercano a R.E.O. PlagiarismIsArt, con el tema 'Contubernio', Eldar ha deconstruido totalmente la canción, respetando tan solo los samplers originales pero conformando una pieza totalmente original. Por mencionar a otro miembro de contubernio.es, como los anteriores, hay también una versión de The Wyrm, en concreto del tema 'From the Deep Sea', uno de los temas más puramente Dark Ambient, un puro infierno abisal en el que extraños y monstruosos peces profieren ruidos que emanan del Averno. Un gran tema. Por cerrar la contribución madrileña citaremos a Verbum y Lomo Bajo, que se ven reflejados en el álbum con las versiones de 'Aevum VI' y '18 de Julio' respectivamente, la primera dark ambient con toques industriales y la segunda más minimalista. Esto de que un grupo catalán, como es Eldar, haya contado con todos estos grupos madrileños podría resultar extraño si nos remitimos al tópico de la rivalidad entre Madrid y Barcelona. Yo celebro que no sea así pues habla muy bien de Eldar que no mira de donde son los grupos que le gustan y en donde coincide conmigo pues tengo la suerte de tener muchos amigos catalanes siendo de Madrid. Si encima que estamos en un ámbito tan minoritario nos empezamos a decir que si tú eres de aquí o tú eres de allá, estamos apañados. Pero el fenómeno que aquí pasa es casi el contrario, que siendo Eldar de Barcelona, están representados más grupos madrileños que barceloneses, y esto se nota en la ausencia de algunos nombres relevantes. Parece que dentro de la misma escena en la misma ciudad no se terminan de llevar todos bien. Una pena. Ahora le toca el turno a los grupos catalanes de la escena aquí representados, como no podía ser de otro modo. Los barceloneses presentes, aparte de Eldar, naturalmente, son Persona y Der Blaue Reiter. La versión de Persona vuelve al más puro Dark Ambient apocalíptico, mientras que en Der Blaue Reiter hay toques marciales además del característico teclado frecuente en sus composiciones. Una de las sorpresas de este trabajo es el hecho de que estén presentes dos  proyectos de Badajoz: Erg y Nurss ¿Podríamos hablar de una miniescena Dark Ambient pacense? Yo desde luego no tenía ninguna noticia de estos grupos y por supuesto que celebro su inclusión. Los dos están en una línea Dark Ambient de corte minimalista. Y ahora toca dar el salto al continente americano. Allí debemos detenernos en Argentina y en México. Desde Buenos Aires proviene Argentum y desde México Escuadrón de la Muerte (Aguascalientes) y Psychaotic (Chihuahua). De todos ellos me quedo con 'Le Syndrome de Cotard', la versión de Psychaotic, en el que las disonancias de instrumentos melódicos crean un estado de ansiedad, de convulsión en el oyente. Por último, citar el único tema propio de Eldar, 'Zeigeist', a través del cual podemos ir comprobando como pone a todas y cada una de las versiones su sello propio. Una sabia combinación de elementos Dark Ambient con percusión marcial, que hacen de este tema una evocación de la destrucción. Después de lo visto, por donde pasa Eldar, y con él toda la escena Dark Ambient hispanoamericana, no crece la hierba. Un Cd importante.

In un catalogo costellato di nomi blasonati e/o di amici stretti, la Cold Meat Industry ha sempre inserito qualche outsider pescato con attenzione. Si tratta in massima parte di progetti nuovi con alle spalle una carriera brevissima, presi sotto l'ala protettrice del buon Karmanik che dà loro una risonanza e una distribuzione di primo livello nel panorama underground. Gli Eldar sono tra questi fortunati eletti, primo progetto spagnolo (se la nostra memoria ci assiste) ad entrare nel roster della grande label svedese, con alle spalle due piccole pubblicazioni licenziate dalla rocambolesca SkullLine e una montagna di file in formato mp3. "Sapere Aude" è stato creato quasi interamente grazie all'interazione tra il duo spagnolo e vari progetti amici (tutti provenienti da aree linguistiche ispaniche), che appaiono in qualità di co-autori in ogni traccia del disco, ad eccezione dell'iniziale "Zeitgeist", già edita in una compilation della SkullLine. Ne viene fuori un album che potrebbe assomigliare ad una compilation (qualcuno ricorderà in tal senso alcuni lavori simili a firma Bleiburg), ma nella sostanza viene mantenuta una grande uniformità stilistica, segno evidente che i Nostri hanno saputo gestire al meglio un'operazione sicuramente non semplice. Gran parte delle tracce ci riportano indietro di quasi una decina anni, ai tempi del trionfo di Der Blutharsch, degli allora debuttanti Toroidh ed A Challenge Of Honour e, più in generale, dell'affermazione del sottogenere martial-ambient. Temi oscuri prettamente atmosferici vengono spesso arricchiti da samples, discorsi e declamazioni, e non mancano inoltre percussioni guerresche, inserti rumoristici che rimandano in larga parte ai campi di battaglia, inserimenti di motivi orchestrali d'epoca e di qualche tema strumentale con ogni probabilità campionato. Tra gli ospiti che hanno co-firmato il lavoro, molti dei quali totalmente sconosciuti, svettano Der Blaue Reiter, due promettenti moniker come l'argentino Argentum e gli spagnoli Persona e la vecchia conoscenza Plagiarism Is Art, realtà iberica scoperta vari anni or sono da Albin Julius. Il modo con cui è stato sviluppato rende "Sapere Aude" un prodotto interessante, sebbene il risultato finale rischi di scivolare nel revival di una scena che al giorno d'oggi risulta - almeno in parte - più evoluta. Gli affezionati del genere ne sapranno riscontrare sia le giuste derivazioni che gli alterni aspetti positivi.
