Symphonies and strident martial percussions open this release. The sounds within are competently conveyed through a number of instruments, at times varying instrumentations bravely experiment with new directions the result being that there is little stagnation of style and the music does not reside wholly within the genre of martial ambient - that in itself is refreshing as the unexpected is not always unwanted. The tracks themselves display a progressive musical narrative and diverge enough to prevent a simple retread of forms. There is a sense of ruin, of decay evoked here and wrapped in curling fogs that hang over silent rivers that snake through, empty and barren fields. Eldar have something in common, sound wise, with contemporaries Les Joyaux De La Princesse and Regard Extrême. 'Ama Terasu' certainly illuminates but with a dead light that is not wholly unpleasing.

Eldar is the solo project of Barcelona-based musician Marc Marinee, who has also played in various other bands including Dying Person, Vettius Valens and Belaur, and this, the sixth Eldar album, is the first to be released on cult German label SkullLine, in a tiny edition of 50 numbered copies. Eldar is named after a word from the ancient Iberian language meaning ‘epidemic’, and the project is intended to combat what Zyklon sees as a cultural and musical epidemic. It’s a call to arms, in other words, and thus it isn’t surprising to find a distinctly martial tone in Eldar’s music and graphic imagery: “Eldar is the struggle of opposites, is the struggle of humanity and the individual.” The ten tracks of Ama Terasu occupy 47 minutes, with most titles being given in an unknown language, which may be ancient Iberian, I guess. It’s certainly not Spanish or English, though. My review copy of this album arrived with no booklet or other documentation, so there’s a limited amount of information I can offer, other than my impressions of the music.
‘Yaincoa Flitz’ is a powerful opener, with an orchestral fanfare leading into thunderous percussion and brooding, low industrial electronics with processed vocals, in the vein of early Laibach, A Challenge Of Honour, or Horologium’s more martial work. The second track, ‘Vagadonnaego Adar’, is more noise-based, with heavy battlefield effects and atonal barrages of textured noise. There’s a fragmentary organ melody, but this track is more akin to the martial noise of projects like Toroidh or Panzar than to Laibach’s orchestral bombast. ‘Dibus Deabus’ overlays subdued, distant drums with heavily treated vocals and crowd noise samples, tinkling bar chimes and minor-key ambient synth chords. ‘Liber Legis’ (named after Aleister Crowley’s Book Of The Law) is much more amorphously structured, with no percussion and dense, shifting multiple layers of drones, punctuated by sudden blasts of brass or vocal samples, and the following track, ‘Arcani Radgost’ remains substantially in this mode, with the addition of reverberating percussive beats, high, sustained church organ chords and echoing unearthly plainsong-like chants adding an eerie ritualistic atmosphere, something like EVP or Archon Satani. ‘Dar Birinar’, like ‘Liber Legis’, is more drone-based, with a babble of vocal samples vying for supremacy over a desolate soundscape of bleak drones and sudden, sweeping metallic tones. There’s some interesting bits and pieces on Ama Terasu, but I'm not convinced that it really hangs together as an album. As the above description indicates, it shifts between martial industrial to ritual ambient to freeform drone electronica to ambient synth, without really creating a sustained, absorbing atmosphere. A little more focus and intention could see Eldar making a much more coherent work.

Ama Terasu“ ist bereits das sechste Album der Spanier Eldar, limitiert auf 50 Stück und bei der Qualität des Gebotenen in absehbarer Zeit sicher ein begehrtes Sammlerobjekt. Zehn Stücke finden sich auf dem Album, das in seiner Kombination aus düsteren Ambientflächen, Martial Industrial-Einflüssen, sakralen Elementen und purem Industrial einige wirklich bemerkenswerte Momente beinhaltet. Der Vergleich mit Laibach, den das Label zieht, ist nicht so weit her geholt, auch wenn das pathetische Element und der donnernde Gesang aussen vor bleiben und Eldar sich nach der Hälfte des Albums sehr ambientmässig geben. Stücke wie „Dibus Deabus“ und „Gortica!“, die aus dieser ruhigen Atmosphäre ausbrechen, weisen in die richtige Richtung und können mit ihrer sakralen und feierlich melancholischen Stimmung durchaus überzeugen. Was mir auf „Ama Terasu“ trotz der Klasse der Stücke ein wenig abgeht sind die grossen und erhabenen Momente, der songschreiberische Geistesblitz oder das Unverwechselbare im Sound Eldars, aber das wäre bei aller Klasse Erbsenzählerei.

Este es uno de los proyectos más interesantes y con mejor perspectiva de futuro en lo que se refiere al dark ambient europeo y, por descontado, dentro del panorama nacional. De hecho Eldar proviene de Barcelona y está encabezado por Marc Marinee que se encarga de dirigir este entramado musical íntimamente ligado al misticismo cultural y filosófico. Música ambiental realizado con sentido y dotado de un fondo visible enraizado en la tradición ancestral ibérica. Pero Eldar no es sólo dark ambient, sus composiciones encadenan secuencias oscuras y profundas con samplers o voces parcialmente tratadas y distorsionadas. Ideal para escuchar con unos buenos auriculares y apreciar cada efecto, cada instante que penetra intensamente en sus variadas piezas, a veces intuyendo influencias marciales y otras veces experimentales. Este año ha publicado dos trabajos, “Ama terasu” y su continuación “Solve et coagula” (del que espero hacer una reseña próximamente), editados por Skullline con unas tiradas muy limitadas y a buen precio, por lo que no hay que despistarse y hacerse con una copia de estos cds de auténtica oscuridad ambiental.

Sin duda el mejor Cd de Eldar hasta el momento, sino tenemos en cuenta el que saldrá en breve para CMI, y uno de los mejores que salió el pasado año dentro del Dark ambient – Martial. Aunque en esta ocasión menos Martial y más electrónico experimental. El Cd no es realmente nuevo ya que la mayoría de temas son antiguos que para la ocasión han remasterizado y versionado. El Cd en principio tenía que funcionar a modo de maxi Cd, con las tres primeras canciones, como presentación de “Solve Et Coagula” pero finalmente fueron añadiendo más temas y acabó siendo un larga durada de altísima calidad y publicado por separado. Los temas pasan de la marcialidad de Yaincoa Flintz o Dibus Deabus al ambient de Arconi Radgost para acabar con temas más experimentales. Sin duda un Cd muy recomendable, como toda su discografía, y ahora solo queda esperar a la publicación el mes que viene de su nuevo Cd “Sapere Aude” en la todopoderosa Cold Meat Industry. Por suerte ya lo he podido escuchar y es realmente una maravilla. No hay que dejar escapar la oportunidad de hacerse con sus trabajos.
